About

This page is somewhat out of date. A lot of things have changed since I wrote it. For one thing, I’m working on about 12 different projects at the moment, all of which will be released really soon. Check back soon by which time I should have added more information about my projects.

I’m currently working for an awesome stealthy startup in Palo Alto. If you’re an interesting person, we should have coffee sometime. Email me.

My full name is Abimanyu Raja. Almost everyone calls me Abi (note: the “a” is soft).http://www.abi.sh I was born in India, spent my childhood in various parts of Indonesia and went to high school in Singapore. Currently, I’m a freshman at Stanford University in Palo Alto.

Although I am interested in literally everything, at the moment, I focus on technology, design and politics or to be more precise, I focus on the intersection between them. Read more about my projects and hacks below. At some point, I’d like to work intensely in other fields such as brain science or creative writing or what have you.

In terms of sociopolitical ideology, although I find it tough to assign a label to myself, I could possibly be called a individualist or a classical liberal (or a constitutionalist). I believe all human beings are equal. On principle, the individual must never be sacrificed for the state and the state exists only to protect individual liberty. I believe gay marriage should be legalized (and that marriage shouldn’t even be a legal contract), women should be free to do what they want with their unborn children and Muslims (or anyone, for that matter) should be allowed to wear burqas.

Since 2007, I’ve followed American national politics fairly closely. And despite my seemingly conservative notions of individualism and the state, I’m a supporter of Barack Obama1 and more often than not, side with the Democrats rather than the Republicans2. But overall, I’m disappointed at the state of American politics, just as the Founders would be if they were alive. As far as Indian politics goes, I support the secular, pro-free-markets Congress Party. I don’t concern myself with Singaporean politics since the ruling party has almost complete control of the parliament and other branches of government3.

I am a tolerant atheist. At least, for the time being, I cannot answer the question of whether or not religion is/was necessary for human evolution even if it is untrue. While I believe the world might be a better place if we didn’t have religion, I’m fine with religious people. On the other hand, I dislike atheists who insult religious sentiments purely for the sake of it.

Projects

I’ve interned at two Singapore-based web startup, SharedCopy in 2007 and JamiQ earlier year, and at the Institute for Infocomm Research in Singapore in the winter of 2007. I worked on a physics research project with DSO National Laboratories for about a year and half and in addition, I did a short research project related to wireless mesh networking with Dr. Ben Leong of National University of Singapore4

I work primarily on Mac OS X but also spend considerable amounts of time developing on Windows and Ubuntu. I code in Javascript and Python, and write semantic valid HTML/CSS. I am also familiar with C++, JAVA, PHP and Scheme.

Here’s a short list of my major personal projects:

  • Devo — A simple command launcher that I attempted twice, first as Catalog and then, in a much more simplified form as Devo. Devo, a runner-up in the Extend Firefox 3 contest, is no longer in development as I prefer to hack on Ubiquity.
  • Ubiquity — I was one of the initial members working on Ubiquity 0.1. I have continued to contribute to Ubiquity since then. Browse the archives on my old blog to read about my various contributions.
  • YipYip is a project still in its very early stages that lets web developers send notifications to the user from their webpage. It supports the Fluid and Prism API. Websites known to have Yip support are Meebo, Filttr and TweetTabs. Yip was featured on Lifehacker as well as on several other blogs.
  • fixmycity.sg — Coming soon.

Besides these projects, I have also made a few contributions to other open source projects. To check out a complete list as well as quick hacks such as Lazybar and Ubiquity commands, browse my old blog’s archives.

Hiring

I occasionally freelance in Firefox extension development and web development. Email me if you are interested in hiring me or if you’d like to see a full resume.

About the site

The main domain – www.abi.sh – runs on Google App Engine. The blog itself – blog.abi.sh – runs Wordpress which is hosted on NearlyFreeSpeech. The theme is based off the WP Typo theme with several custom modifications. The background picture is used here under the Creative Commons License. All code is written on Textmate and transmitted to the servers with Transmit.

Web standards are important and pages on this site are semantic and valid. However, CSS likely won’t validate because I’m making use of several CSS3 properties such box-shadow and border-radius that are only available in Firefox and Safari. You will find no Flash on this website. The hCard microformat is used on the homepage and this page.

While it’s too early to tell for this blog, my old blog (warning: it’s ugly!) gets about 10,000 views a month.

  1. While this may seem contradictory to some (perhaps, even most), it is not; I intend to write a longer essay explaining the nuances of my political positions.
  2. with the possible exception of Congressman Ron Paul
  3. There are only 2 elected members in the opposition while the ruling party has 82 seats
  4. I also took two computer science modules at NUS while in high school
