About a month ago, I released Yip which allows you to receive notifications from web applications. The response to Yip has been fantastic.1
But Yip only works on Firefox. So, Aditya decided to write a similar plugin that enables notifications for Safari — Growler. It is an awesome plugin that you ought to check out if you use Safari2 frequently. You can read more about it here and here.
To get more people and websites to use proper system-wide notifications, it is important that notifications are available on various browsers and operating systems. I’d like to see similar functionality with add-ons on Internet Explorer and if possible, on Google Chrome too. If you’re interested in helping with this or if you’d just like to talk about notifications, drop me an email.
In other exciting news, Yip has an official website! Many thanks to Mozillian Daniel who happened to own the yipyip.com domain (what a coincidence!).
- A lot of people have downloaded Yip and it has been covered on popular blogs such as Lifehacker and Download Squad. Also, TweetTabs, a real-time Twitter search interface, has added support for Yip. ↩
- At the moment, Growler only works with Safari on Mac ↩

@Garth: Growler does work in Tiger, only for Safari 4 though. I’ve tested it, and it worked perfectly. Are you sure you meet all the requirements?

Hi. I have Tiger 4.11 and Safari 4 but perhaps it’s because I have an old G3 ? Anyway I get a notice saying it wont work on my system. Thanks for answering.
